Our Abroad101 Student of the Week is Stephen Ster, a junior at Luther College majoring in Classics. Throughout high school, Stephen was very active in his school’s music and theatre programs. He has a very wide range of passions, which made choosing a major for him very difficult. Stephen chose to study Classics because it covers a vast spectrum of knowledge and allows him to further discover who he is and where he came from. Stephen has become so passionate about Classical History that he plans to pursue a doctorate to be a college professor to continue to spread knowledge and excitement about the ancient world to others for years to come!
Since his major focuses on cultures that lived on and around the Mediterranean, studying abroad sounded like the perfect learning opportunity for him. He’s decided to take a course at the University of Malta on the history of Malta and their ongoing refugee crisis. This program will also give Stephen the opportunity to travel to several other cities such as Rome and Istanbul, allowing a broader view of other Mediterranean cities. He will even be given a week of free travel to visit the ancient sites around Greece that fascinate him. He is hoping to raise enough money to cover the plane tickets and the $1000 dollar study abroad fee for Luther College. The cultural experiences and history he will be exposed to are the opportunity of a lifetime for a Classics major like Stephen. Check out Stephen’s mission here and see how you can help him achieve his dream!
