How to Keep Your Cool in School

Picture this: you have a big Algebra test tomorrow, two essays due next week, a list of assignments on your plate, and a soccer game tonight… and you haven’t started anything. Sound stressful? The demand of school can be overwhelming at times, but if you can learn how to keep your cool, you’ll be able to overcome the hard days without the stress-induced meltdown. Here are a few ways to stay calm.

1. Breathe.

It might seem obvious, but breathing can help you keep your cool. When you start feeling stressed, take a few minutes, go to a quiet place, close your eyes, and take some deep breaths. Try mediation or yoga to center yourself.

2. Make a list.

Sometimes things seem much more manageable when it’s on paper. Write down what you have to do and prioritize. It will feel great to check things off as you go.

3. Exercise

Get moving to stay calm. Even if you just take a 10-minute walk or go for a quick job around the block, it will help you clear your head. Exercise also releases endorphins, which make you happier. It’s science.

4. Talk to a friend or family member

There are days when you just need a pep talk. Call one of your friends or family members to tell them what you are feeling. They can give you the confidence to get through it and give you some calming advice.
