Our “GoEnnounce Yourself” Scholarship, sponsored by Upromise, awards one student $500 each month! This award goes to a student who’s doing a great job showcasing who he/she is, by sharing school related e-nnouncement updates with Followers on their GoEnnounce Student Page. Our “GoEnnounce Yourself” Scholarship recipient provided by Upromise for the month of September is… Merrissa Hart!
A freshman at Foothill College, this compassionate student is heavily involved in outreach programs in her community. Merrissa is a Peer Assistant II for the Foothill’s Community Ambassador Program, where she leads outreach events and recruitment. Determined to make a positive impact, Merrissa has earned an Award of Excellence in Leadership for her work as a Student Community Ambassador. Merrisa plans to transfer to UC Santa Cruz where she will get her degree in psychology. Her favorite subject is English, and in her free time she loves painting and writing poetry. With her degree, she aims to become a counselor for at-risk youth. Her experience and hard work makes us believe she’ll help many kids realize what they can become.
During the month of September, Merrissa really showcased her level of involvement and dedication to the Community Ambassador Program at Foothill College and her future plans of helping others. The first event she organized was the International Student Orientation at Foothill and it was a success. Her second event was New Student Orientation, where she participated in the First Year Experience (FYE) pilot program orientation. During orientation she was up on the big stage sharing insight with other students about her experiences as a first year student at Foothill She spoke about the challenges she faced when starting Foothill, how she overcame them, and the different support and resources that are available for the new students to utilize to be successful. She also helped organize Opening Day at Foothill, where she worked very closely with the Vice President of Foothill College, Denise Swett.
She also e-nnounced her pride over her new student employee ID, which includes her new title as Peer Assistant II. Working towards her goal of transferring to UC Santa Cruz, Merrissa has been successful in getting two letters of recommendation: one from the VP of Student Services and one from the Program Coordinator at the Community Ambassador Program. With both of these letters she hopes to get accepted into UC Santa Cruz’s Leadership Apprenticeship on her winter break in December. She expects this opportunity will put her in a better position to win the Karl S. Pister Leadership Opportunity Scholarship when she graduates from Foothill College and transfers to UC Santa Cruz. She was also selected out of 200 applicants as a YES Scholar. She’s quickly getting involved, as later in September she e-nnounced she was asked to write for the YES Scholar monthly newsletter. Way to go, Merrissa, there’s no doubt that you will make an AMAZING counselor one day!
