Our “GoEnnounce Yourself” Scholarship, sponsored by Upromise, awards one student $500 each month! This award goes to a student who’s doing a great job showcasing who he/she is, by sharing school related e-nnouncement updates with Followers on their GoEnnounce Student Page. We are happy to e-nnounce our April winner…Chelsea Prater!
A junior at University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, Chelsea Prater spends much of her time pursuing her passion of assisting those with disabilities. Chelsea balances her education with many extracurricular activities, with intense focus toward her dream of working in a pediatric hospital setting with kids with Down syndrome. She is majoring in Therapeutic Recreation with an emphasis in Pre-Occupational Therapy studies, and minoring in Spanish. Chelsea’s high grades are evident through her membership in National Honor Society and Eta Phi Alpha Honors Society. She is already a certified nursing assistant at Willowcrest Care Center in South Milwaukee, WI, and a Physical Activities Coordinator for a peer with Down Syndrome. She’s also Secretary of her Spanish Club and has already studied abroad in Costa Rica, working to perfect her spanish and become more aware of Latin American cultures. Her ardor for the language also allows her to combine her altruistic nature with her Spanish speaking skills as she’s also teaching Spanish to people with disabilities. She shares updates, highlighting the joys of sharing her love for Spanish culture, with these students throughout April.
During the month of April, Chelsea used her Student Page to e-nnounce all sorts of additionally impressive things. She’s applying to grad school and preparing to take her GRE, getting her a step closer to earning that master’s in Occupational Therapy. To accompany the many other scholarships Chelsea has earned over the years, in April, she was awarded the UW-La Crosse Foundation’s Lillian Neale Campbell Scholarship for her dedication helping those with disabilities (this is the second consecutive year she’s won this!). Her ongoing commitment to giving back is further emphasized by her weekend as an Easter Seals camp counselor this month. She must have been an impressive role model because she shares how they offered her a position for the entire summer at Easter Seals Camp in Milwaukee!
For her classes this month, Chelsea facilitated a leisure education workshop for kids with ADHD, ages nine to twelve and facilitated her first program at the RAVE (Recovery Avenue), which is a drop in center for adults with mental illnesses. She also created a brochure for her Inclusion Specialist Workshop, that will be an all day event to provide tips for teachers and administrators to make the classroom a more welcoming environment for students with disabilities. Additionally, Chelsea shares the involvement portfolio that she created for her pre-internship class as a culmination of all of my work and volunteer experiences in the field of Therapeutic Recreation. Talk about impressive!
On top of all that, Chelsea met with the Development Director of the La Crosse Y.W.C.A. to discuss her “Let’s Play Ball!” grant proposal. Get inspired and read the proposal which she shares on her Student Page! The director was so impressed that she is not only submitting Chelsea’s proposal, she’s would like to make it an annual program at La Crosse YWCA!
Yet despite all her volunteering and studies, Chelsea also finds time to continue to improve her skills as a distance runner. She ran a mock half marathon this month to prepare for the Grandad Half Marathon in La Crosse.
Keep on e-nnouncing, Chelsea, we’re excited to see your hard work paying off! Learn more about Chelsea and keep up with her amazing achievements here.
