A huge congratulations is in order for our Abroad101 Student of the Week goes to…Derek Landes! Derek is a sophomore at Columbia College majoring in psychology and minoring in history. His interests include psychology, history and French. When not studying he is involved in the Alpha Sigma Lamba Honor Society, The Columbia Substance Abuse Advisory Comission, as well as running a 12-step support group meeting and social events for adolescents with drug and alcohol addiction. This includes 15 volunteer hours weekly for the past 8 years of his life. In the free time that he has (if you can believe he has any), Derek spends his time gardening/raising chickens, weightlifting/sports, and studying history. A dream of Derek’s has always been to expand his horizons and open his mind to a new culture and it’s people.
Derek has an amazing opportunity to study abroad for a whole year in Brussels, Belguim where he can gain a better understanding of his studies as well as immerse himself in a new culture. He plans to use this year abroad to really figure out what he wants to do with this future and we think this is just the place for him to do it. Derek has been hard at work applying for scholarships and grants to make this dream become a reality but he still needs a little more assistance to cover all of expenses! The Abroad101 Student of the Week initiative awards a student who created a Mission for a study abroad program on GoEnnounce with a donation to their fundraiser. Learn more about this partnership from Abroad101 CEO Mark Shay and GoEnnounce co-founder Melissa Davis here.
