Screen Shot 2015-07-02 at 1.23.09 PMOur Abroad 101 Student of the Week is Diab Thor from California State University, Chico. Diab is a senior who is a pre-nursing student, majoring in nutrition and food science with a minor in Spanish. While in high school she wanted to stay close to home but she quickly realized that to grow as a student she would have to do something out of her comfort zone. This led her to explore studying abroad an she will be heading to Costa Rica through the University Studies Abroad Consortium program for the 2015-2016 school year. To make this educational year abroad a reality, Diab has been working to save up money and was recently awarded the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship. Some of her other achievements include being on the Chico’s Dean’s Honor Roll this past year, getting the EOPS Certificate of Merit, and even being involved in Sigma Omega Phi Multicultural Sorority Inc!

As the thirst for knowledge increases Diab saw how studying in Costa Rica would not only be a life enriching experience but a way to enhance her skills. While in Costa Rica her year will be split into two semesters that will be held in different cities, one in Heredia and the other in San Ramon. While in Heredia, she will be taking a fast track Spanish course in addition to a Latin American dance class. When in San Ramon she will apply the skills she learned to intern at the hospital there. Also, for the duration of the study abroad program she will be staying with a host family. She is currently raising funds for this amazing experience that will cover her tuition, school expenses, travels and home-stay cost. Diab says, “I didn’t want to give up my dream of studying abroad simply because of the cost.” and we couldn’t agree with her more!  Check Diab’s Mission here.
