This week’s Abroad101 Student Of The Week is Katherine Williamson, a junior at Western Michigan University. Katherine is earning her degree in special education and will also graduate with a minor in secondary mathematics. Her dedication to become an educator that’s ready to make a difference is already evident through her work with the Alternative Summer Experience, Best Buddies and the Student Council for Exceptional Children. These clubs and experiences have helped her gain invaluable teaching skills. On top of her admirable volunteer work, Katherine is also a member of the Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity. After graduation, Katherine plans to teach either at an inner-city school or internationally. We don’t know about you, but what a better way to reach this goal than to study abroad!

This May, Katherine will be traveling to Senegal, Africa through the Cultural Connections Study Abroad Program at Western Michigan University. After a two week pre-departure orientation, Katherine will be heading to Senegal where she will be taking classes in the local language and doing research. This research she will be conducting is on the impact of globalization on accessibility for individuals with disabilities. Katherine will also be participating in a comparative analysis of public policies in both the Midwest U.S. and Senegal. She hopes that this research will act as a catalyst in bridging the gap between the two countries. While in Senegal, she will be staying with a host family and learning more about culture in Senegal. Katherine has started a fundraising Mission to help pay for some of the trip expenses and just gained a donation from our friends Abroad101 to help her reach this goal. You can check out her Mission here too!

The Abroad101 Student of the Week initiative awards a student who created a Mission for a study abroad program on GoEnnounce with a donation to their fundraiser. Learn more about this partnership from Abroad101 CEO Mark Shay and GoEnnounce co-founder Melissa Davis here.
