A HUGE congratulations goes to our 115th Abroad101 Student of the Week winner, Sydney Lundquist! Sydney is currently a senior at Washington and Lee University, majoring in Biology. She is a brilliant student, with a 3.9 GPA, received a lot of honors, awards and distinctions like the W&L Biology Departmental Award or the Scholar Athlete Academic Honor Roll just to mention some. Along with this, she is also very involved in volunteer work, clubs, societies and extracurricular activities, and she is dedicated to environmental sustainability, basketball and her faith. Sydney enjoys and appreciates small things in life and an ideal day for her consists in reading Jane Austen, drink some coffee, participate in outdoor physical activities and spend time with the people that are important for her, like her family and her close friends.
Sydney already has plan for the long-term future, she wants to earn a Ph. D in conservation ecology and her ultimate goal would be to lead a research team focused on restoring ecosystems. Through this, she hopes to be able to provide humans with environmental benefits to help alleviate poverty and to create better living environments for people and animals. As it can be seen, Sydney has impressive ambitions. Nevertheless, her short term plan is to go Study Abroad in England and attend the University of Cambridge in October 2017. There, she will pursue an MPhil in Biological Sciences for Zoology research and she will be working on freshwater mussel conservation. She is very excited about this unique opportunity and this experience will provide her with the chance to explore and understand new ecosystems, work with conservation ecology professionals, and grow as a leader and ecologist. The international experience will help her broaden her perspectives and open her mind, and it will be a real asset for her future career.
Sydney has already been accepted to the University of Cambridge’s program, but the offer is conditional until she can prove that she has the means to fund herself for the year. That is why she started her fundraising Mission. She will use the money that she raises for travel expenses, and housing while she’s at Cambridge.
We wish Sydney all the best in England and hope that she will have a life changing experience there!
