A HUGE congratulation goes to our 112th Abroad101 Student of the Week winner, Rachel Cummings! Rachel is currently a junior at the University of Louisville, in Kentucky. She is majoring in Public Health, a subject that she is fascinated about. In addition to her major, she is also minoring in Global Public Health. She is a dedicated student and believe that you should always take the opportunities that are given to you.
Rachel has always wanted to travel, and now she has the amazing opportunity to go Study Abroad in San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica, at the Veritas University. There, she will be taking two courses related to her major, and she will also be able to practice her Spanish and discover Costa Rica’s values and culture. The first course that she will be taking is called “Spanish for Healthcare Professionals”, and the second one is called “Costa Rican Healthcare and Tropical”. This Study Abroad program will be a five weeks trip, and Rachel will be living in a homestay.
Rachel is very excited to participate in this new experience, and to combine both studies and adventure. As a Public Health major, she believes that it is very important to also know a foreign language because a lot of public health work is done overseas. She thinks that to get an education in both Spanish and Global Health will be incredibly useful, and will give her a comparative advantage for her future career! Once she graduates, Rachel’s first goal is to work in foreign countries and help them improve their healthcare systems and infrastructure.
However, to study abroad can get pretty expensive, and that is why Rachel started her fundraising Mission. She is currently working to save up some money, but she needs all the help that she can get. She will use the funds to pay for the tuition abroad and the travel costs.
We wish Rachel all the best in Costa Rica and hope that she will have a life changing experience there!
