Samantha Matt wrote a piece that was published in The Huffington Post called “11 Things I Wish I Knew When I was a Senior of College.” We liked the article so much, we decided to create our own list for High School— “5 Things I Wish I Knew When I Was in High School.”
1. It’s important to get involved
High school flies by, and with only four years before you move on to college, it’s important to make the most of it. Join clubs; play sports; try out for the school play. Not only are these activities great resume builders, but you’ll also be glad you took advantage of your high school years in the future.
2. Always challenge yourself.
Sure, it’s easy to brush off those AP classes or decide not to apply for that summer internship program, but when it comes to college application time, you’ll be happy you did. While you may feel on top of the world your senior year of high school, you’ll quickly learn that there are many other students exactly like you—do more to stand out.
3. Spend more time with family.
As a high schooler, your family may completely annoy you, but we promise you’ll miss them when you’ve graduated and gone on to college. Don’t take your time living under their roof for granted, especially the home-cooked dinners!
4. Save up.
If you’re working at the mall on the weekends, or making some extra cash as a lifeguard during the summer, you may want to spend your earnings on an X-Box or a handbag—but try to resist and save up. When you’re in college and need to buy textbooks or a week’s supply of ramen noodles, you’ll be glad you did.
5. Follow your own path
As a high school student, your friends, boyfriends, or girlfriends may influence your choices. You might compare yourselves to them, especially when it comes to post-high school plans. Don’t make any big decisions based upon what your friends or a boyfriend or girlfriend is doing… make your own path! You don’t want to regret following someone else’s lead; follow your own goals to find happiness.
