Our “GoEnnounce Yourself” Scholarship, sponsored by Upromise, awards one student $500 each month! This award goes to a student who’s doing a great job showcasing who he/she is, by sharing school related e-nnouncement updates with Followers on their GoEnnounce Student Page. We are happy to e-nnounce our May winner… Alex Burd!
A senior at Hickory Ridge High School, Alex is passionate for service and science. Her extensive community service comes from 11 years as a Girl Scout and involvement as president of her school’s Key Club. Alex also holds many chair positions, such as co-chair of Special Olympics Committee, chair of Community Outreach Committee, and co-chair of Fundraising Event Committee. Her studious attitude in pursuit of her passion for STEM can be seen in her membership of Mu Alpha Theta math honors society, National Beta Club, and the National Honor Society. Alex’s favorite subject is AP Biology. She plans on attending North Carolina State University to major in microbiology and concentrating on its medical applications within immunology, virology, and pathology.
During the month of May, Alex caught our attention with her amazing e-nnouncements, such as recently winning the $10,000 State Employees Credit Union “People Helping People” Scholarship! Early in May, she e-nnounced her acceptance as one of the 185 accepted applicants out of 1,000 to participate in the university honors program at NC State. This gets her one step closer to her dream career: serving a leadership position within a microbiology research facility such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She also posted a picture of honors graduation cords, for National Beta Club and Mu Alpha Theta, as well as a stole for National Honors Society, the highest academic honors society for high school students. She will be graduating this year “with highest honors”.
Alex has been busy this month with her AP exams. She’s shown off her brilliant work in AP Biology, ranging from using ice and rock salt to make ice cream to project she completed on DNA condensation. Alex’s activities outside of school have included attending a Special Olympics year end meeting. She was even able to get in touch with people at NC State to continue volunteering with Special Olympics next year away at college.
Keep on e-nnouncing, Alex, we’re excited to see what you’ll do in college! Learn more about Alex and keep up with her amazing achievements here.
