Congratulations to our 118th abroad 101 student of the week winner, Marissa Small-Towns! Marissa is currently a junior at the college of Charleston, majoring in International Business with a minor in Spanish. She is a track and field student-athlete and spends a lot of hours practicing, travelling for competitions and volunteering on behalf of her team. Marissa succeeded in obtaining a 3.0 GPA while being a student and an athlete at the same time but she confesses that her life as a student-athlete doesn’t allow her to have a lot of free time. She will be graduating in May 2018 and her plan is to start a Master degree in the following Fall. She also wants to take some time to travel to Latin America to practice her Spanish and learn about new cultures and lifestyle.
Marissa started a fundraising Mission for her Maymester program in Seville, Spain. The program that she’ll be attending is through Spanish Studies Abroad. This Study Abroad will help her complete the 3 credits that she needs in order to complete her Spanish minor, and along with that, she will also be able to complete her study abroad requirement for her International Business Major. Since she was a kid, Marissa has always been interested in exploring and discovering different culture, lifestyle and people from around the world. She has been taking Spanish classes since the age of 5 and is pretty fluent in Spanish by now. That’s why she decided to go Study Abroad in Seville, Spain. She know that by going there, she will have the opportunity to practice her Spanish with native speakers, to immerse herself into a new and different culture than the one that she knows, and that this experience will help her to get ready for a career in International Business. She is very excited to get the chance to learn about the culture, the local customs and other things that students might not necessarily learn in the classroom.
But to Study Abroad can get very expensive, that’s why Marissa started a fundraising Mission. She will use the money that she raises to pay for the cost of the trip which includes tuition, room and board, and other various fees that are required for the abroad program.
We wish Marissa all the best in Spain and hope that she will have a life changing experience there!
