A huge “congratulations!” goes out to our Abroad101 Student of the Week, Chanelle Gontarz!  Chanelle is a Navy veteran that used to work in the technical field, insuring the safe keeping of vital equipment and systems. Along with her admirable service, Chanelle is a mother and wife, and is taking on the difficulties of higher education while her child also takes on the challenges of preschool. Chanelle is currently a junior at Old Dominion University and is double majoring in communications and Asian studies. Chanelle felt particularly drawn to Asian studies because of her childhood, where watching anime like Sailor Moon really sparked her interest in learning about Japanese history and culture; she even began learning the Japanese language as a kid. Now, Chanelle will finally have the opportunity to study abroad in Japan at Kansai Gaidai University.

This study abroad program has been a big dream of Chanelle’s, as you can imagine, and although she has the funds for the program, it will be difficult for her to experience all that Japan has to offer without some support. This trip will be her first opportunity for her to visit a country that she has a deep interest in, and she wants to make the most of it.
