High school looks so glamorous on TV and in the movies, right?!? And then it’s total disappointment when we realize our high school experience isn’t going to be a replica of High School Musical! Don’t worry, high school is still AMAZING but here’s 5 differences to expect from what you see in the hollywood version vs. what you encounter in real life.
In the movies, it’s only the “nerds” who care about school. In reality, it’s pretty much everyone. Failing a class is not cool. With more and more students realizing the importance of college, grades are a pretty big deal!
2) Cliques and the Status Quo
High school isn’t as polarized as the movies will have you thinking. Yes, there are some groups that band together, but they aren’t impenetrable. High school is a good time to branch out and meet new people, no matter what clique they’re a part of!
The plots to so many teen movies are centered on romance. Not everyone in high school has a significant other. In fact, dating can make it hard to maintain the balance of extracurriculars and academics that you are already trying to juggle. So, if you’re single, don’t worry. Take advantage of the extra time you may have for yourself. If you are dating in high school, be careful not to let it become a distraction.
4) School Dances
Hollywood has a budget which far supersedes that of your high school. No school dance will be as glamorous as the ones on the silver screen, but with your friends and a good song, it will definitely be more fun!
High school is really an awkward time between puberty, stress, and the acne making its debut on your face! High school actors are generally older than the ages they’re portraying, so they’ve outgrown most of this awkwardness. On top of that, they have make-up artists and hair stylists whose job is to make them look flawless. Not to mention, your wardrobe doesn’t have a costume department behind it either. But that’s okay. In real life, it’s your confidence that makes the statement!
While your entire cafeteria may never burst into song (we’re talking about you, High School Musical), high school will be, is, or was, at the vary least, an interesting and irreplaceable experience.
High school isn’t like the movies, but that doesn’t make watching them less fun! What’s your favorite high school centered movie? Tell us below.
